Tremella The Beauty Shroom

This translucent, almost white mushroom goes by many names, including snow mushroom, silver ear mushroom and in more recent times referred to as the beauty shroom, with good reason. Brimming with antioxidants Tremella mushroom helps to slow the natural signs of ageing, considered to support a glowing complexion and enhance skin hydration.

In the wild tremella resembles a frilly jellyfish that has found its way into the forest. Exquisite to behold, it's even more exquisite to taste with our Tremella extract powder having a softly sweet malty flavour – and yes you will catch us eating Tremella directly off the spoon!

Tremella Fuciformis has been used across the Orient dating back as far as 200 A.D. documented in the Traditional Chinese Medicine classic, The Divine Farmer's Materia Medica. Mostly reserved for royalty, this adaptogenic medicinal mushroom was consumed as a youth preserving, longevity tonic. Tremella has also been attributed as the beauty secret of one of the four most beautiful women in ancient Chinese history, Yang Guifei (719 – 756), famed for her flawless complexion.

Helping to naturally slow the signs of ageing, Tremella is prized for its hydrating, healing and skin rejuvenating properties. Read on as we dive deep into Tremella’s benefits for beauty and skin health.

Tremella | Deeply Hydrating

Dewy, soft skin, yes please! This hydrating shroom can bring deep lubrication to our connective tissue and fascia. Tremella has also been shown to act in the same way as hyaluronic acid, often referred to in beauty circles as the 'fountain of youth'. Like hyaluronic acid, Tremella mushroom draws and holds moisture through the skin’s layers.  A 2016 study [1] demonstrated Tremella’s moisture retention capacity to be greater than hyaluronic acid, supporting the supple and plump appearance of the skin.

What gives Tremella the edge over hyaluronic acid? Tremella’s particle sizes are actually smaller than those of hyaluronic acid, giving Tremella the ability to hold 5 times more water and allowing it to penetrate the skin more easily. And as we know our bodies produce hyaluronic acid, though as we age, its production starts to decrease which is why Tremella is such a beautiful shroom to incorporate into your skincare regime, moisturising from the inside out.

Tremella | Collagen Production

When it comes to skin and the visible signs of ageing, collagen is never too far from the conversation. Collagen is a protein present in our skin and bones that helps them to keep their structure, and becomes increasingly depleted as we age affecting the elasticity and appearance of our skin. A 2015 study found that when applied topically, Tremella may increase collagen by 22-26%[2].

Tremella | Glowing Complexion

Tremella also contains antioxidant compounds that have been demonstrated to increase SOD (superoxide dismutase) which protects the skin by scavenging free radicals. When free radicals become too abundant in the body due to sun damage, stress, or pollution, SOD can work against free radical damage to the skin helping with dark spots, fine lines, wound healing and sun damage, which is why it is used in many cosmetics as an antioxidant and anti-ageing ingredient. By helping to generate SOD Tremella can act as a regenerative anti-inflammatory for the skin, maintaining the lipid and moisture barrier.

Tremella has long been used to help heal scarring and skin imperfections. Research has demonstrated that the beta-d-glucans in Tremella Fuciformis can also assist in wound healing[3]

Tremella | Vitamin D

Tremella mushroom is rich in vitamin D which has been demonstrated to prevent skin ageing[4]and is also thought to support melatonin regulation [5] – and we all know how important quality sleep is for rejuvenating our brain and entire body. Beauty sleep here we come!
